Kevin Henkes

Kevin Henkes was born in 1960 in Racine, Wisconsin, and has spent the majority of his career based in the American Midwest. He studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison before moving to New York City to pursue his interest in children's book illustration. He returned to Wisconsin, where he has lived and worked for decades, drawing inspiration from the quiet rhythms of domestic and neighborhood life.

Henkes is a prolific author and illustrator of picture books and novels for young readers, most notably 'Chrysanthemum', 'Lily's Purple Plastic Purse', and his Newbery Medal-winning novel 'Olive's Ocean'. His work is characterized by anthropomorphic mice characters who navigate the complex social hierarchies of school and family.
