On Tony Hillerman

A brief life

Tony Hillerman was born in 1925 in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma, and raised among the Potawatomi people. After serving in the infantry during World War II, he pursued a career in journalism, eventually settling in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he became a professor at the University of New Mexico.

On the page

Hillerman is best known for his Navajo Tribal Police mystery series, featuring detectives Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. His novels, including 'Dance Hall of the Dead' and 'A Thief of Time', masterfully blend traditional police procedural elements with the intricate cultural, spiritual, and geographical landscapes of the American Southwest.

In their time

While initially met with modest attention, Hillerman’s work gained significant critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of Navajo life and its departure from standard detective tropes. He received numerous accolades, including the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America, and enjoyed consistent commercial success throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The afterlife

Hillerman is credited with creating the 'ethnic mystery' subgenre, paving the way for authors to explore cultural identity through the lens of crime fiction. His meticulous research and evocative descriptions of the high desert continue to define the literary identity of the Four Corners region.
