Gertrude Stein
1874–1946
On Gertrude Stein
A brief life
Gertrude Stein was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1874 and spent her formative years in Europe, eventually settling in Paris in 1903. She became the center of a legendary salon at 27 rue de Fleurus, where she mentored and influenced the leading figures of the Lost Generation. She remained in France throughout both World Wars, living with her lifelong partner Alice B. Toklas until her death in 1946.
On the page
Stein’s writing is characterized by a radical rejection of traditional syntax and a focus on the rhythmic, repetitive qualities of language. Her major works include the experimental portraiture of 'Three Lives', the dense linguistic puzzles of 'Tender Buttons', and the popular, accessible memoir 'The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas'. Her career was defined by an obsession with the 'continuous present' and the attempt to capture the essence of subjects through linguistic accumulation rather than linear narrative.
In their time
During her lifetime, Stein was often dismissed by mainstream critics as an eccentric or a purveyor of nonsense, though she maintained a small, devoted following among the avant-garde. Her publication history was erratic, with many of her most challenging manuscripts remaining unpublished for years until she achieved sudden, widespread fame with the release of her memoir in 1933. This success brought her on a lecture tour of the United States, where she was met with a mix of genuine curiosity and public mockery.
The afterlife
Stein is now recognized as a foundational figure of literary modernism, whose experiments paved the way for postmodernism and the Language poets. Her influence persists in the work of writers who prioritize the materiality of the word over the mechanics of plot. She remains a central, if polarizing, icon of twentieth-century experimental literature.
