Miguel de Unamuno

1864–1936

Notice

Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo (1864–1936) was a Spanish writer and philosopher of the Generation of '98. A prolific essayist, novelist, poet, and playwright, he served as rector of the University of Salamanca and was a deputy in the Second Republic. His work often explored the tension between intellect and emotion, faith and reason, positioning him as a foundational existentialist. His major philosophical essay was *Del sentimiento trágico de la vida*, and among his most acclaimed novels are *Niebla*, *Abel Sánchez: The History of a Passion*, and *La tía Tula*. His literary output, which includes the novel *Three Exemplary Novels*, reflects the modernist and existential concerns of early twentieth-century Spanish literature.
