Frida Kahlo

1907–1954

Notice

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Employing a naïve folk art style, she explored questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society, often with strong autobiographical elements that mixed realism with fantasy. Associated with the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement and sometimes described as a surrealist or magical realist, her paintings also addressed her experience of chronic pain. Her work is represented in our catalogue by the published diary, *Diary of Frida Kahlo: an Intimate Self-Portrait*.
