John Wainwright (1921-1995) was an English poet, novelist, and playwright. He won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1957 for his novel Hurry on Down, and a Cholmondeley Award for Poetry in 1975 for his collection, The Fires and the Phoenix. He wrote plays for the Royal Court Theatre, the Arts Theatre, and BBC Television. He was an early advocate of the British Poetry Revival and was known for his vivid and often controversial writing, incorporating social and political themes. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Professor of Poetry in the Univerity of Derby.
