Paul Ricoeur

1913–2005

Notice

Paul Ricoeur (1913–2005) was a French philosopher whose work is situated within the tradition of hermeneutic phenomenology, alongside figures such as Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Gabriel Marcel. He is best known for combining phenomenological description with hermeneutic interpretation, expanding the study of textual interpretation to include mythology, biblical exegesis, psychoanalysis, theory of metaphor, and narrative theory. His thought is exemplified in works such as *The Conflict of Interpretations*. In 2000, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy for his contributions to hermeneutic phenomenology.
